Carpooling: Apps the way to go about it

These ride-sharing apps are usually platforms where people can discuss travel plans while making the commute easier and cheaper for all the participants. . Carpooling can also be a solution to the growing problem of congestion on Indian roads.

The idea of carpooling has gained a lot of mileage in India in recent times. With growing focus on reducing carbon emissions, clubbed with factors like rising fuel prices and new policies like odd-even scheme coming into place, the concept of carpooling has gained a lot of traction amid urban commuters in India.

Taking advantage of the trend, a range of new-age apps have come up looking to bring together office-goers and commuters. These ride-sharing apps are usually platforms where people can discuss travel plans while making the commute easier and cheaper for all the participants. These apps can usually be downloaded for free and commuters can login to find the nearest riders going in the same direction as them for carpooling.

Carpooling can also be a solution to the growing problem of congestion on Indian roads. With inadequate infrastructure to support the ever-rising numbers of cars in urban spaces, sharing a ride to work can go a long way in easing the burden on Indian roads. Even popular cab hailing services like Uber and Ola are coming up with carpooling options to tap into this new segment that’s growing in popularity. The latest addition to the growing number of such apps is RideMantra.

Here are some of the popular ride-sharing apps which can help you save some money on your next ride to work:

RideMantra

It is a free service with a peer-to-peer people connect platform to ensure the commute of employees of an organisation is hassle free and cost effective. RideMantra, which works through a website as well an app, lets you find your colleagues, friends or other verified people travelling on the same route and allows you to share your ride with them.

After signing up, users need to enter their travel plans. The app then displays the suitable ride matches in a map. The app also allows chat options with fellow users. One can then choose the best match and share the ride. The best part of RideMantra is that it’s not limited to specific cities. The service can be used to commute from anywhere to anywhere as long as someone else is on the same route and time as you. Anyone with a legitimate email address and mobile number can join RideMantra. Those willing to share their vehicle must have a valid driving license and vehicle documents. The app also claims that it filters and disables fake profiles created with intent to defraud the system. Also, users who consistently receive poor ratings/reviews get blocked from using RideMantra.

BlaBla car

In the app, users need to enter their location and destination. The service will then display a list of people who you can share the ride with. It does not have any listed drivers. Users who wish to pool in with other people post sharing requests. It is well-suited for office-goers who intend to travel regularly and comfortably without shelling out too much money.

Ola cab share

Ola has introduced a carpooling feature where commuters can register to offer and share free rides. It prompts you to enter your car details including registration number to either offer to or share a ride with other people. Ola also comes with a ‘Share’ option for carpooling. At the time of your first ride, you can choose to ride with everyone, office colleagues or create a group of your own.

Carpool India

It’s a Delhi-specific app aimed at people willing to share rides on their way to work. It also allows users to create a pool without a vehicle. Users can arrange for their own rides within the group.

ToGo carpool

Together We Go is another popular app for daily home-office commute. The app also gives ratings based on user experience.
